A general election is held every three years to elect trustees to the Yukon Francophone School Board. The last general election was held on October 3, 2016. The next general election will be held in October 2019. The hours of voting are from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
You are eligible to vote if, on polling day, you are:
- a Canadian citizen
- at least 18 years of age
- resident in the education area for at least 3 months, or
- a parent of a child attending a school in the education area
There is an additional eligibility requirement for an election of trustees of the Yukon Francophone School Board, which is a school board established on the basis of language. Electors must have the rights referred to in section 23 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
A parent with children attending more than one school may vote at the election for each school board or school council attended by each child.
The education area is the Yukon Territory as described in the Yukon Act.
You must vote at the polling place established by the Returning Officer, which is typically located in the school in the education area. Polling place information will be available on this website and in local newspapers at election time.
If you are away on election day you can vote by mail-in ballot. A mail-in ballot may be requested from your Returning Officer up to the close of polls on polling day.
First, you must be an eligible elector to be a candidate. You must file a completed nomination paper with the Returning Officer in the education area where you wish to participate.
You may not be nominated or elected as a member of a school board if you are ineligible to become a member unless, on nomination, you file a statement of ineligibility and divest the ground for ineligibility within 30 days after polling day. Nomination papers are available from Returning Officers, school offices and Elections Yukon at election time.
The completed nomination paper must include the signatures of 3 nominating electors who live in the education area where you wish to participate as a candidate. It must be filed with the Returning Officer by noon on nomination day, which is 11 days before polling day.
The Education Act prescribes that each school board shall have between 5 and 9 trustees. The number of trustees on the Yukon Francophone School Board, as specified by the Minister of Education, is 5.
