A general election is held every two years to elect members to each school council. The Education Act prescribes that a general election is held between 23 and 25 months after the previous election, on a date specified by the Minister of Education. The last general election was held on May 2, 2016, so the next general election is expected between April and June, 2018.
You are eligible to vote if, on polling day, you are:
- a Canadian citizen
- at least 18 years of age
- resident in the attendance area for at least 3 months, or
- a parent of a child attending a school in the attendance area
There is an additional eligibility requirement for an election of members of a council established on the basis of religion. Electors must be recognized by the Catholic Episcopal Corporation.
A parent with children attending more than one school may vote at the election for each school council or school board attended by each child.
Descriptions of the 26 attendance areas are available here.
You must vote at the polling place established by the Returning Officer, which is typically located in the school in the attendance area. Polling place information will be available on this website and in local newspapers at election time.
If you are away on election day you can vote by mail-in ballot. A mail-in ballot may be requested from your Returning Officer up to the close of polls on polling day.
First, you must be an eligible elector to be a candidate. You must file a completed nomination paper with the Returning Officer in the attendance area where you wish to participate.
You may not be nominated or elected as a member of a school council if you are ineligible to become a member unless, on nomination, you file a statement of ineligibility and divest the ground for ineligibility within 30 days after polling day. Nomination papers are available from Returning Officers, school offices and Elections Yukon at election time.
The completed nomination paper must include the signatures of 3 nominating electors who live in the attendance area where you wish to participate as a candidate. It must be filed with the Returning Officer by noon on nomination day, which is 11 days before polling day.
The Education Act prescribes that each school council shall have between 3 and 7 members. The number of members on each school council is specified by the Minister of Education, and appears here.
